What it found

This cross-sectional study of healthcare workers examines remote working alongside loneliness, workplace isolation, well-being and perceived social support. It finds that workplace isolation and loneliness are distinct constructs with different correlates, and that perceived social support moderates the relationship between remote working and well-being.

Why it matters for practice

The separation of workplace isolation from loneliness matters for programme design: interventions aimed at reducing subjective loneliness may not address structural isolation from colleagues, and vice versa. Because the design is cross-sectional, it establishes association rather than the direction of effect between remote working, support and well-being.
